On the rear of an MX5 NB (1998–2000), the rear bumper plays a key role in the design lines around the trunk lid, fenders, and taillights. In addition to providing protection in the event of a minor impact, this part significantly determines how wide and sleek the rear end appears. Over the years, play can sometimes develop around mounting points and fastening clips, causing the fit to become less precise. When the adjacent parts around the trunk lid and rear end are also neatly aligned, the overall look is much more cohesive.
