Here’s how to store your MX5 properly this winter
Tips from Our Workshop
Summer is over, the days are getting shorter and wetter, which means it’s time to give your MX5 some extra care.
Whether you store it indoors or keep driving through the season, a few smart steps will keep it in top condition.
1. Dry it after the rain
After a rainy drive, use a microfiber cloth to dry the sills and the lower edge of the roof.
It only takes a minute but significantly extends the lifespan of your MX5.
2. Clean before storage
Make sure your MX5 is completely clean before putting it into winter storage.
Dirt, tar, and insect residue can damage the paint if left on too long.
Use for example Meguiar’s Wash & Wax or Hybrid Ceramic Detailer for a quick clean and protective shine.
3. Care for the leather and interior
Prevent drying and mold. Use Meguiar’s Ultimate Leather Balm to nourish and protect the leather from moisture and UV damage.
Freshen up the interior with Meguiar’s Air Refresher, perfect for eliminating musty odors when the car sits unused for a while.
4. Maintain the soft top
Your convertible roof takes a beating in wet weather. Regularly check it for small tears, seams, and blocked drains.
Clogged drain channels are a common cause of wet feet, something you definitely want to avoid.
Keep the drains clear, clean the top with a soft brush, and then apply a Fabric Protectant or Rubber Seal Conditioner to keep it supple and water repellent.
5. Disconnect the battery
If the car won’t be driven for a while, disconnect the battery or use a trickle charger to keep it in good condition.
6. Storing indoors or outdoors
A dry, well ventilated garage is ideal. Use a breathable (never plastic) cover so moisture can escape.
And for those storing outside, Meguiar’s Hybrid Ceramic Wax provides long lasting protection against rain and dirt.
