Fresh oil is only part of an oil change on the Mazda MX5 NC (2005 - 2015). As you drive, the oil filter traps small dirt and wear particles from the oil flow. Its sealing ring closes the joint with the filter housing, and the filter specification must suit the engine lubrication system. Replacing the filter alongside the engine oil prevents trapped particles from remaining in the old filter.
