De startmotor van een Mazda MX5 NA (1989 - 1997) zorgt ervoor dat het motorblok begint te draaien wanneer de contactsleutel wordt omgedraaid.
De elektromotor grijpt via een tandwiel in op het vliegwiel zodat de krukas in beweging komt en de motor kan starten.
Voor deze eerste draai gebruikt de startmotor de elektrische energie die wordt geleverd door de accu in de motorruimte van de cabrio.
