The thermostat of a Mazda MX5 NA (1989 - 1997) determines when coolant is allowed to flow through the radiator. As long as the engine is cold, it remains closed so that the engine warms up faster. Once the proper temperature is reached, the thermostat opens and allows the fluid to flow through toward the radiator at the front of the car, where the heat is dissipated.
