The master cylinder of an MX5 NB (1998–2000) converts the force applied to the brake pedal into hydraulic brake pressure. This pressure is transmitted to the brakes via brake lines. During hard braking , the system works in conjunction with the ABS, which can regulate the brake pressure per wheel as soon as the wheels threaten to lock up. Wear on the master cylinder can be noticeable as a soft pedal or reduced brake pressure.
