The mid-muffler on an MX-5 NB (1998–2000) muffles the exhaust noise before the exhaust gases flow further back. Due to its low position, it is exposed to a lot of moisture, dirt, and splashing water. The underside of the body, where rust and damage can occur, is also exposed to these elements. Corrosion on the mid-muffler can lead to leaks, additional noise, or rattling.
