Exhaust gaskets in an MX5 NB (1998–2000) ensure a gas-tight connection between the various exhaust components. A leak upstream of the lambda sensors—which measure the oxygen content in the exhaust gases —can draw in outside air and affect the measurement. A worn gasket is often recognizable by a ticking or hissing sound, especially when the engine is cold.
