The lambda sensors on an MX5 NB (1998–2000) measure the oxygen content in the exhaust gases and transmit this information to the engine management system. Spark plug wires, which transmit high voltage to the spark plugs, also play an indirect role in this process, as poor ignition can disrupt combustion. A faulty lambda sensor can lead to increased fuel consumption, rough engine running, or error codes.
