The catalytic converter in an MX5 NB (1998–2000) converts harmful components in the exhaust gases. Proper combustion is crucial here, because if the ignition system produces a weak spark, unburned fuel can be expelled into the exhaust. This can cause the catalytic converter to overheat and become damaged. Loss of power, rattling noises, or abnormal emission readings may indicate wear or a malfunction.
